Discover a strengths-based way to understand dementia progression through the six GEMS® States of Brain Change. Participants will compare abilities, behaviors, and sensory changes across the states, recognize that a person’s state may shift throughout the day, and practice identifying GEMS states through guided scenarios and a structured reference table.
Available in 1 - 1-hour session (CEU eligible) or 2 - 30-minute sessions (not eligible for CEU)
Each workshop provides real-world strategies caregivers can begin using immediately in home care settings, assisted living communities, skilled nursing facilities, and family caregiving environments.
Why it matters:
Caregivers need more than information — they need practical tools that help them feel prepared, capable, and supported in everyday care situations.

Strengthen your ability to recognize and respond to situations that may involve a person living with dementia. This eight-hour training helps first responders identify possible signs of dementia, use effective observation and approach techniques, and practice Positive Physical Approach™ and Hand-under-Hand® skills. Participants will learn to respond rather than react, supporting safer and more successful interactions for everyone involved.
Available in 4 - 2-hour sessions, 2 - 4-hour sessions, or 1 - 8-hour session.
Learn what dementia really is and how brain changes can affect abilities, communication, and daily life. Over six sessions, explore the GEMS® States of Brain Change, practice supportive care skills, recognize the strengths that remain, and learn how to advocate for the person living with dementia while building a dependable support team.
Discover how typical aging differs from brain changes associated with dementia, including changes in memory, communication, judgment, and other abilities. Attendees will receive information about local caregiver resources and have an opportunity to ask questions during an interactive Q&A session.
Why it matters:
When caregivers understand what is happening in the brain, they can respond with greater confidence, empathy, and effectiveness.

Available in 6 - 1-hour sessions
Why it matters:
Small changes in approach can dramatically improve cooperation, reduce caregiver stress, and preserve dignity for the person living with dementia.

I primarily work with in-home care and long-term facility staff and administration but can provide education and skill building for support groups, memory cafe's, first responders, etc.
I also work with caregivers where the person living with dementia is aging in-place.
Positive Approach to Care® focuses on understanding how dementia changes the brain and adapting our approach to what abilities remain. Rather than focusing on what has been lost, we build on what is still possible.
By understanding the "why" behind behaviors, caregivers can experience less stress and resistance, strengthen connections, and create more positive interactions while preserving dignity and quality of life.
No! That's the great thing about CEDAR. While the principals will be the same, Positive Approach to Care®, is the premise for all approaches, seminars can be customized to your needs.
